In The World Of All Things Ridiculous

Through my daily browsing, I came across this on Engadget.

iPods/Phones are taking over the world, ever so surely. I think instead of delaying the inevitable, we should just hold a contest to see can produce the most ridiculous Apple accessory, just to get the damn assimilation over with. Here are some of my suggestions:

-Macbook with built in dock (cordless!)
-Frying pan with dock & speakers
-Household phone with dock
-iPod/Phone accessory that charges another iPod/Phone

I think we are at a point where the technology is cheap enough (and iPods/Phones are expensive enough) that instead of putting a damn dock into everything, just giver everything Wi-Fi. Then everything can interface with anything.

Think about it, your fridge could monitor its contents, and text you if you are low on milk, or even automatically order your groceries online. Or better yet, check with the TV if there's a big game tonight, then check if it has proper snack food & tell you what you need before you come home for work.

But in all (closer) reality, I had a genius idea yesterday. We were setting up the office X-mas tree, and got to talking about the trees with the built in lights and/or fiber optics. My idea is for a Wi-Fi enabled X-mas tree with stringed lights built onto the branches along with fiber optics. The base will also contain a sound system so that you can program you tree with your laptop as to when to turn on/off, have the lights slowly fade to different colours of your choice, and synchronize the lighting to your favorite holiday music.

Plus, it would just be awesome to say your X-mas tree has Wi-Fi.

Isn't there a lot more to synchronising everything than simply giving everything Wi-Fi?

Good grief. The software needed to co-ordinate everything would be huge, and the services that your applicances would use (ordering groceries online) would have to be much more common than they are.

The light synchronization would need an embeded system which you would then program with software on your laptop, using the Wi-Fi connection.

Yes there is alot more hard/software need to do the appliances thing than just Wi-Fi, & services would need to be more common to use it on a mass scale. But I was merely just exaggerating the direction of current technology for get a laugh or two out of people, but you had to go and ruin it!

Sorry. I didn't realize you were trying to get a laugh. I honestly think technology might get to that point someday, and I think people would want that to be the case.

I assumed you were being sincere.

Well I don't doubt for a second that technology will get there, and there was a bit of sincerity in that, but I think we all know that this sort of thing hitting the market tomorrow is less than likely.

Thanks Buzz Killington.

Seriously though. Think about how awesome a Wi-Fi X-mas tree would be. You could even have an LCD screen on it to cycle through your X-mas photos!

I call it, "The Internet Tree"
