I Never Joke When it Comes to Navigation

This post is a reply to the following article from Imprint, as well as comments from Tingles blog.

I don’t want to start a fight either. I just want you to know you are wrong.

The writer, if he can be called that, was trying to make a point. Obviously he wants to be a writer for some form of media, but using that type of language in a newspaper is totally unacceptable. I am completely certain that he could express his same opinion without dumping a load in a twat. If he was any kind of writer at all, he wouldn’t have to use slang & profanity to express his opinion. Using the language he did makes sense only if you are chatting about this on MSN.

You make it sound like the audience the article was “written for” is a bunch of immature grade 7ers, who still giggle when their teacher or parents say “buns.” This school is filled with intelligent people.

If people want to try out writing, then the Imprint is great. But still being a newspaper, it should be presented as a newspaper. If they want to explore their writing styles in a place that they can do that without getting ridiculously harassed for it, at least when it comes to articles with the stated derogatory terms, the writer can easily do so without going public about it. Journals, scrap pieces of paper, or even…. *drum roll please* a BLOG! Golly gee, Batman, I never would have guessed that.

A blog allows for a writer to “publicly” give opinions with whatever language, slang, or profanity they want. Why? Because it is not a formal (aka professional) form of media that is distributed to the public. Yes, the public has access to it if they wish (just like newspaper), but is informal.

You say we’re using opinion as fact against another opinion, but we’re not. Its not my opinion that the term ‘twat’ is derogatory and shouldn’t be used in public media. Ever hear CNN or Global say twat on TV or have it on their website? And don’t try telling me that our newspaper is for expressive people, poets, and other ‘creative’ people. It’s a fucking newspaper. You want to read that type of thing? Try MathNews, as an example. It’s a great read, available to the public, full of insulting content (to some), yet is not a newspaper.

Maybe I shouldn’t be so harsh, but then again, maybe Mr. Myers shouldn’t be retarded and publish his expressive writing in the university’s newspaper. It is this sort of thing that can deteriorate the school’s reputation as producers of professional persons. However, he is not entirely at fault for this “outrage.” Imprint itself is to blame for letting this language slip by the editors. That within itself looks bad.

I do see where you are coming from, however. I agree he should be entitled to write what he wants, but in a professional world, that type of thing needs to stick to blogs and the like. If you want to call my character bad, blame professional writing (and the fact that our school newspaper is still a newspaper, and thus, formal) instead of me.

As for you being very, very well educated, I would like to say this without passing any judgment (note: However, this being a blog and informal, I could pass judgment if I so desired.). It doesn’t matter how well educated one is nor whether or not one has a degree. An education does not imply intelligence.

For Lack of a Better Title...

Well my friends, it hasn't been that long. Unfortunately this post isn't as interesting as the last, but if definitely contains contents.

My first little rant is about our friend Lmack. Before he came to Waterloo to visit me (and Tingles) 2 weeks prior, we were chatting on the tele. He told me about this great idea he stole to make a 3way post about our adventures. Already in the mindset that this event was blog-worthy, I jumped at the idea to turn this weekend into a saga.

I pitched the idea to Tingles, who agreed to its brilliance. Everything was well, the wheels begun to spin. As the weekend ended, we divided the course of events and began on our way. Tingles started us off nice & early with the introduction, & I followed suit within a week with the main body of this epic event. Unfortunately for you, my dear readers (if there are still any), the cliffhanger ending to my contribution have left you hanging, and I apologize if your arms are getting tired.

Lmack is supposed to finish the story with the conclusion, but for one reason or another, has not. I am a little disappointed as its going on 2 weeks since the event. I have no doubt that he will finish it (I believe the post is due latter this day), but I worry that the quality will be lacking for 2 reasons.

The first is time. I do not doubt that he will forget some interesting details which I probably don't remember at this point. Its not a huge deal, but why read a good post when you could read something really good.

My second objection to this delay is that he will probably combine this post with other blog-worthy events that have occurred in the past 2 weeks. Not that he can't post how he wants, but it could distract from the content at hand move focus to less awesome adventures.

This whole tri-post was his idea, and it saddens me a little bit that he is falling behind on it. All in all, I still anxiously await the suspenseful conclusion.

Next up: Hitman. I saw it last night, and I must say, the movie far exceeded my expectations for being another video-game-made-movie.... thing. The action was good, with guns and bombs and all that good stuff (no car chases, however). It also had some good one liners that made you laugh with the movie, . All in all, if you go in expecting it to suck, then you will be pleasantly surprised with suspense, action, and a little bit of deceit.

Something that bothered me with the movie was the previews however. Now I can't give an opinion on the following series of movies, as I haven't seen any of them (don't be hatin', Lmack), but I think it needs to stop. If you're still unclear what I'm talking about, here is a trailer.

I will leave Lmack to comment on that.

As for myself, class is done, and I am ecstatic about moving home. I have a stupid-ass project to do still in cs246, which is about as specific as the term "I'm over here." Shitty part is its worth 9% and not even the prof, the guy who came up with this code trap, has a fucking clue how it works. I really don't know what will come of it, I'll let you know after exams.

Exams are done Dec. 13th for me, at which point I will be moving back to Stratford until May, for my co-op position. Lots of gaming, drinking, and awesomeness need to happen then, especially on the X-mas break. I hope to be hosting a pre-bar night party on Friday, the 21st. Check in for details.

As always,
